Following is an overview of the swim lesson levels:
Parent/Child: The parent is the teacher. The instructor will give all the parents a paper explaining how to teach their child. The instructor, either in the pool or on the deck, will give parents advice and guide them while they work with their children.
Level 1: An intro to swimming. This level will get the child comfortable in the water and begin teaching some basic swimming skills, including elementary backstroke, front crawl, submerging head, blowing bubbles, etc.
Level 2: Builds on Level 1. This is for children who are comfortable in the water. The instructor continues working on basic skills and introduces new strokes. The child should be beginning to swim on his or her own.
Level 3: Begins working on endurance. Child should be able to swim fairly well by himself. New strokes will be introduced and basic skills refined. (The back crawl is introduced, along with the leg motion for breaststroke.) The child should be able to swim the width of the pool without assistance.
Level 4: Continues working on endurance and refining strokes. In this level, the child should be able to successfully swim the front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. He or she learns to dive. The goal at completion of this level is for the child to be able to swim the length of the pool -- 25 yards -- using strokes that have been taught.
Level 5: Strengthens endurance. This level will also build on previous strokes learned. The goal is to teach the child all swimming strokes except for butterfly -- breastroke, back crawl, front crawl, elementary backstroke and side stroke.
Level 6: This level builds endurance and refines strokes. This course focuses on the prerequisites for becoming a lifeguard. It will also work on other areas that are required to become a certified lifeguard.
Swim Team - Fusion and the Montgomery County Sharks Swim Team provide a well rounded program for boys and girls, ages 5-18. To join, swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards (one pool length) unassisted.
